A zine (pronounced /zeen/) is a self-published work that often explores subcultural identity with an artistic approach. The word “zine” comes from “fanzine” or “magazine”. Unlike traditional magazines with a strong focus on mass appeal, zines represent independent voices with a focus on personal and experimental aesthetic.
Started in the 1930s within sci-fi fandom, zines were used as communication tools to share ideas and connect. They became widespread in the 1970s and 1980s as an underground art medium for countercultural and marginalized groups. With its focus on a do-it-yourself mindset, zines invite creators from all backgrounds to share their experiences freely, breaking away from conventional constraints, trying out forms, styles and contents to reflect their individuality.
These little books have been the backbone of my art journey. They give me the feeling of freedom and bravery. I create zines in A3, A4 formats, sometimes smaller. I experiment by fusing texts, drawings and collages made from magazine cutouts and discarded materials. I want to repurpose everyday found objects into vibrant expressions. Through these little books, I hope to share fragments of my world, and I hope you’ll find meaning in the details.
